Founded in 1990, the Palma Sola Botanical Park is a local park that is funded by donations and is open to the public, free of charge. Another fun attraction here is the Hidden Garden Nursery. It's open on weekdays from 9:00 - 2:00 and is home to exotic plants, including succulents and bromeliads.

Lake Manatee State Park is a lovely place to go kayaking. However, they do not do rentals; you must bring your own. You could also fish from the dock or wade in the water. The swimming beach is open during good weather, and there's a picnic pavilion where you can enjoy a nice lunch.

With 120 acres of space, Neal Preserve boasts an extensive network of trails. Along the way, you'll see oak, poplar, and mangrove trees, along with lots of birds and small mammals. The half-mile boardwalk trail is a good one to start with on your first visit.

If you don't mind taking a drive, Leffis Key Preserve is a great place to visit. The preserve offers a 360-degree view of the Gulf of Mexico from the top of its main hill. The trails at Leffis Key Preserve are a mixture of packed shells and raised boardwalks. Dogs are not allowed, but you'll see plenty of native wildlife. There are even a few managed fishing areas, plus interpretive signs to tell you about various plants and animals.
